What are we learning in February? Religion - This month we are finishing chapter 15 about belonging to a parish. This chapter test will be combined with chapter 16 for a test grade. Chapter 16 is a basic introduction to the seven sacraments that the Church celebrates. In chapter 17 we will go into further discussion of the sacrament of Baptism and recognize how the Church welcomes new members. We will also share about our personal baptisms with the class. We begin the season of Lent later this month (February 22nd) when we celebrate Ash Wednesday. As a family think of some way to grow closer to our Lord during this season. Reading - We will be finishing our third reading book after the first week which means we will be tested on the unit vocabulary as well as take the end of the unit reading test. Then we will begin our fourth book with the theme of "Hello, Neighbor". You have probably noticed that I'm sending home the reading book more frequently as the stories are getting longer and there are more vocabulary words to comprehend. It is always recommended to read other books at home as this will help improve your child's vocabulary as well as his/her fluency skills. The children will be assigned their second book report which will focus on a non-fiction book assigned by the teacher. Look for information to come home soon. English - The children did very well at understanding verbs and differentiating between noun-verb agreement. To make sure that they retain this knowledge, the children are being asked to find the mistakes in grammatically incorrect sentences and to rewrite the sentences correctly. This month we will continue our study of the parts of speech and learn about pronouns and adjectives. Once we know more about adjectives we will learn how to use them to make our writing more descriptive. Spelling/Phonics - This month we will study the following phonetic sounds: the long vowel sound of "o" spelled "ow, oa"; long vowel sound "e" spelled "e, ee, ea"; long vowel sound "a" spelled "a-e"; long vowel sound "e" spelled "y"; long vowel sound "i" spelled "i-e". Math - We are going back to adding and subtracting, but in chapter six we will be learning these facts through twenty. It is at this time that we encourage the children to practice their basic facts at home with flash cards. You can also go to the math book website (progressinmathematics.com) to find review lessons and skills to reinforce each concept or to the firstinmath.com website for other skills practice. We will have fun celebrating the "100th Day of School" on February 9th and we will spend much of our day doing math activities with the number 100. After chapter six we are going ahead to chapter eight to begin our study of money and time. Because the children will be taking the Iowa tests in March, I want to introduce these topics as they can be a little more difficult to master. Afterwards we will go back to chapter seven on geometry. Science - This month we will go into our Physical Science book and learn about movement and sound. We will read about and discuss speed and what makes things move. We will also learn about how sounds are made. Social Studies - The children had fun learning how things we use have changed through the years and sharing their interview information learned from their parents and grandparents. It makes you wonder what will change in the next thirty years. This month we remember President's Day and we will take some time to learn about some of our past presidents.
